Fall Recipes

It's not quite fall yet, and with the latest weather we've had here in Nashville it certainly doesn't feel that way.  Despite that, Starbucks has still released their legendary Pumpkin Spice Latte so I decided to go along with the theme an post some amazing recipes I found for fall.  Yum yum, enjoy!

Creative Ways to Ask Your Bridesmaids

As I have mentioned in a couple previous posts, my best friend is getting married!  I was floored when she got me a card and wrote me a long letter about my positive qualities and then asked me to be her Maid of Honor.  She also had some adorable cookies created (see photo below).  I felt like such a loser because I'm pretty sure when I asked my bridesmaids to be in my wedding it consisted of "Dahhhhh, you're in my wedding, thanks."

I decided to make up for it in this post by sharing a couple of great ways I've seen to ask your girls (and guys if applicable).  Hopefully this will help you get some creative ideas to show your friends how much they mean to you!

DIY Cupcake Flower Pot

I mentioned in a previous post my friend is getting married so when she sent me this photo saying it reminded her of me I had to offer to make something similar for her wedding!  The best part?  I had all the materials so it was totally free.

Materials required:
Bucket of some sort
Styrofoam ball that sits evenly in bucket
Hot glue gun & hot glue
Large toothpicks
Bucket $2.49 from Hobby Lobby on 50% off day (had it from a previous project), ribbon I had from an old gift and lace I also had.  All are hot glued onto the bucket.  The foam balls are available at Hobby Lobby for $3.49 (also already had one).

One quick note if you attempt this at home - definitely use mini cupcakes!  It was hard to get the regular size ones to stay on the ball during assembly.

Bridal Shower Gift: DIY Personalized Beverage Tub

My bestie is getting married and just had an engagement party this past weekend.  I wanted to make her a gift that she could use at the wedding so when I remembered the tub I made for Angela, I knew just that was the perfect project!

Materials required:
Large Beverage tub
Drill with various sizes of drill bits
Burlap ribbon
Hot glue gun and hot glue

I ordered the same beverage tub online from Amazon for $27.  I then picked up some burlap 2.5" ribbon from Joann's for $2.99 with coupon.  Finished with some lace from Hobby Lobby for $1.99 on 50% off week.  Using the same format as I did with Angela's tub, I assembled the ribbon and tied a bow on the end.  It turned out great and Heather said she wanted to use it at her wedding without any prompting.  Score!

DIY Ottoman from a Coffee Table

I have been wanting to do this for ages so I finally got my act together and transformed the coffee table into an ottoman.  I liked the stone on our table but for a bonus room where you want to kick up your feet (literally), it wasn't exactly comfortable!  So the past weekend I went shopping for supplies.

Materials required:
Plywood cut to size of table
Fabric (cut to about 2 feet longer on each side than the table)
Foam (cut about 2" longer on each side than the plywood)
Staple gun and staples

Since my table was slate to begin with, I had to add a piece of plywood on top to have something to staple (and drill) into for the fabric.  I picked up a large piece of 1/2 inch plywood from Home Depot and had it cut to the same size as my table (42x42) for $6.75.  I then went to Joanns and purchased some 2" foam, having it cut 1 2/3 yards for $41 with my 40% off coupon (a must!).  I also bought some fabric I thought would look nice on an ottoman and would match the walls I eventually plan on painting navy.  Thankfully it was on sale for $24.99 per yard and I only needed 2 yards (extra just in case and for buttons).  So for $50 more I was all set.  I was unable to find the fabric I purchased on their website but it should be available in stores and there are lots of similar ones here.

When I got home I was ready to get to work!  Since the plywood was already cut to size, it was easy to just lay it over the table and drill in each corner to secure.

Next, I cut the foam to size, letting a little hang off the edges so they were no longer sharp. They recommended using an electric cutter at Joann's but to be honest mine did just fine with regular old sewing scissors.  If you were cutting more a knife might work better.  I then laid the foam out on the wood.

Last step, and the most tricky, was laying out the fabric on top of the foam.  It has a tendency to want to stick to the foam so you have to make sure it's nice and smooth before stapling the sides.  I stretched it across and under the table edges and began stapling each side underneath so they wouldn't show.

Once stapled under, I started on my tufting.  I measured 8 inches apart and alternated the next row 4 inches from the original.  I did later on realize that my staples weren't secure enough to hold the fabric in place so I went back and drilled 1.5" screws on top and that has secured them from popping out.  You must do the tufting after the fabric is secured underneath on all 4 sides to prevent wrinkles in your fabric.

My last step is going to be assembling buttons to cover the staples/screws where the fabric is tufted, however, I've had some trouble with the craft cover button kits ($4.79 with 40% off coupon + 20% off total purchase mobile coupon).  I think my fabric is too thick to get them to cover and stay.  I'll post the finished ottoman on Friday when I come up with a creative solution.  In the meantime, any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Pottery Barn Fall Decor Knock Offs: Lust at PB vs Must at Kirkland's

I just found out from a friend Kirkland's produces their products at the same factory in China as Pottery Barn.  Score!  I knew that stuff looked familiar!  Thankfully I have been doing Kirkland's for PB inspiration for years - just now my enthusiasm has been validated.  Since it's almost Fall, I'm sure I'll be cruising through there for some fall decor soon.  Front porch decor anyone?

Some of my favorite pieces - found here:

Last, here's some ways to do this PB mantle from Kirkland's!
1. Garland (pre-lit) $39.99 // 2. Pumpkin Candle Holder $16.99 // 3. Mercury Glass Candle Holder $29.99 (set of 3) // 4. Mercury Glass Pumpkin $19.99 // 5. Hurricane (pre-lit) $19.99 // 6. Mercury Glass Pumpkin $24.99 // 7. Monogram Pumpkin $16.99 // 8. Votive $4.99 // 9. Ceramic Pumpkin $14.99 // 10. Rattan Pumpkin $5.99 // 11. Part of #3 set // 12, 13, 14. Ceramic Pumpkins $9.99 // 15. Orange Mercury Glass Pumpkin $24.99

Total mantle cost: $172 with current coupon code YOUPICK.  Remember, Kirkland's is always having sales so this stuff will likely get marked down even further!  Even at regular price, compared to PB which sells one garland for half the price of the total above, it's a total steal!

Advocare - The Miracle Weight Loss?

A friend of mine recently discussed the Advocare potential and her success with losing the last baby pounds using it.  I don't have any personal experience but may be trying it out soon.  If you're interested - her site is below.  She looks fabulous so perhaps it's worth a try!
