Making It Mine

In a previous post I mentioned some of the amazing furniture deals I got from Ikea.  Only problem was they didn't look anything like what i envisioned for the nursery.  However, the great thing about wood furniture is it can always be painted or stained.

I decided to go with a whitewash stain rather than opaque white paint to achieve that worn beach furniture look.  I found this one from Home Depot and decided to try it out.  I ended up using 3 coats to get the final desired look.
Next step was customizing the drawer pulls for the chests.  They came with some matching wood ones but I had fallen in love with the blue starfish I'd seen on the Nautical Nursery.  I searched online but found the blue color was expensive and I needed 17 - $9 a pop wasn't going to work.    I decided to order some less expensive ones in an ugly orange from Amazon, and then paint them blue.  The result: $36.97 for 17 drawer pulls and $0.69 for Hobby Lobby's Folk Art paint in Light Blue (make sure to buy on 40% off product group days).

The end result - my own customized furniture for Hudson's nursery at a fraction of the cost of the other options I'd seen.

Total project cost, including furniture: $217.34.
